Kumantong (กุมารทอง) is also spelled as Kuman Tong, Kuman Thong, Gumantong, Guman Thong.

There are two types of Kumantong.

The 1st type is cruel, wild, ferocious. It is created to fight the enemies and for devious purposes, whereas the other type of is to add charm and bring good fortune to the owners, such as striking the Lottery and attract customers to their shops.

Kumantong the Killer

From this 1st type of fierce Kumantong , branch out four other subtypes:

This Killer Child Spirit is created in a ritual called Plug Seg, whereby a devil or phii taai hoong (ghosts who died from unnatural death or evil spirits) , is captured to possess a small human-like figure made of clay, plastic or bone. The Occult Master will able to command the spirit inside the statue to attack others.

However, this type of Child Spirits is rare and only used by Occult Doctors in the Khmer and Muslim Communities of Thailand.

Moreover, Kumantong Pretkong is able to chase after the enemy everywhere they go but Kumantong Pretmun can only exercise his power within his sphere. Kumantong Pretkong, therefore, is an outstanding black child spirit which can hardly find anything to subdue him.

Kumantong Pretdub is a cold-blooded killer who can cut the enemy’s throat as fast as the professional killer.

Kumantong the killers are only popular among people who practice black magic. Ordinary talisman collectors do not dabble in these.

Kumantong the Fortune Bringer

The type of “Fortune-Bringing Golden Boy” that we can find in general is known for being benign and merciful.

Although he spies on people, he protects houses and shops, brings in customers and create luck and brings no harm to the owner and other people.

Like the Evil Child Spirits, Holy Golden Boys also need a plug seg ritual to come alive. Monks or Archans ( White Robe Spiritual Practitioner) use their mind power to invite high-level spirits to dwell in the figurines. Or they use withered wood from certain trees that already contain spirits to carve the boy.

This Fortune-Bringing Kumantong does not have any particular name.

We can see the statues of “Fortune Bringing” Kumantong placed in many stores in Thailand and South East Asia because the shopkeepers believe Fortune-Bringing Kumantong will attract customers to come to their stores and also bring good fortune, wealth and prosperity to the owners.

Generally, the owner of Kumantong will name his Kumantong figurines such as Udomdat, Udomlap, and Udomchoke. In Singapore or Malaysia, usually, the Kumantong owners will name them as ” Zai Zai”, like a pet name of no particular meaning.

The Monks and Spiritual Doctors merely create these good Kumantong to encourage merchants to do a good deed and want something to hold to. Therefore this kind of Kumantong is the most famous talisman in these days.
